Cupping

Like acupuncture and herbal medicine, cupping is a therapy that has been used for thousands of years. It is a technique that uses small glass or plastic cups as suction devices applied to the skin and muscles. This process encourages Qi and blood flow into the area and breaks up stagnation or congestion.

Cupping is generally used to release and relax stiff and sore muscles, but it may also be used to remove toxins, boost immune function and improve blood circulation. Usually the cups are placed on the back, but they may also be applied to the abdomen, arms or legs. Cups may be left in place for 10-15 minutes, or a little massage oil may be applied and the cups may be moved around the area, creating a gentle or moderate massage.

People will feel tight sensation as the cup is applied and as it is moved. The increase blood flow in the area often leaves a circular bruise on the skin. This bruising is a completely normal reaction and demonstrates that the cupping has been done appropriately. The bruise may vary in colour and intensity depending on the person, however it should disappear within a few days or a week.
